Today we visited The Vatican City, which is the only independent country located within a city. Beginning with the various little churches within the basilica we slowly made our way to the famous Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo. It was an incredible experience. We enjoyed seeing the differing painting styles and gorgeous architecture. One of our personal favorite activities was to simply look up at the ceilings and stare at the complicated scenarios taking place. If you just stare at the ceiling of the Sistine chapel for a bit you will find a couple of bare butts, a really muscly woman making bread, and a snake-girl slithering up a tree. It easy to look at a these things and think "Wow, renaissance painters were pretty weird!" But after staring a little bit more it becomes easier to relate to this apparent chaos. It's strange how similar feelings that you and I experience every day were conveyed by super old dudes feeling that same stuff.
After the Sistine Chapel, we made our way to St. Peter's basilica in St. Peter's square. It was the most spectacular architecture I have ever seen. All of the spectacular marble columns and the area that was created to host the crowning of the emperor was absolutely breathtaking.
We spent the rest of the day in our Bus on the way to Venice.
Ci vediamo domani!
