Day 4 - Amsterdam, Netherlands

Goeden avond!

Today was our first full day in Amsterdam. At 9am, we took the bus to the center where we stopped to tour the lovely city of Amsterdam on bikes. We split into three groups led by separate tour guides. The guides led us through the whole city showing us the endless canals, historical buildings, shops and cafés. Our favorite part of the tour was seeing all of the buildings that are along the canals, as well as learning the rich history of where the Dutch culture stems from.

During the tour, we learned an extensive amount of information. We have learned that there are a million bikes in the city where as there are only 700,000 Amsterdamers. Also another interesting fact is that there are over 2,000 canals in the city. This is due to Amsterdam being below sea level. We also found that Amsterdam was founded in 1275 as a fishing and trading ground.

Following the bike tour, we spent an hour and a half shopping and eating in the Leidseplein square. Then we visited the Anne Frank museum, where someone gave us a thorough overview of the history of WWII and the Frank family. Afterwards, we walked through the building in which Anne Frank had spent two years hiding from the invading Germans, and we learned about all eight Jews whom hid in the building and how they managed to keep their presence a secret. In addition, we learned about what had happened to every person when the SS discovered the hidden house.

After visiting the Anne Frank house, we went on a boat through the never ending canals of Amsterdam. This was a great way to enjoy the city through a different prospective. We saw many beautiful buildings and a lot of unique Dutch houses. We spent about 2 hours navigating and enjoying each others company.

To finish off this fantastic day, we had dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe and then returned to the hotel. Overall, it was a day that we won't forget because of the memories that we made and everything that we saw.

Tot morgen! Slaapwel!
